The road to Safeway
The process of settling into winter on Crescent Beach has begun. Critical to this adventure is food. I promised myself that spending the winter here must include walking for groceries. Part of that promise was that the walk had to be interesting. The Safeway plaza in White Rock is my holy grail. A whole grain bakery, organic butcher, liquor store, video rental, and German deli are satellites to Safeway. The hot-mum capital of planet earth. My goal: to walk here entirely along the natural Pacific beach of Boundary Bay.
I wait until 3:30pm before leaving. This gives the tide a chance to go out as far as possible while still giving me enough light to travel. Walking on uneven wet rocks is a steady workout as the body core adjusts to keep upright. Wet snow is falling, and the water and sky blend into a million shades of grey. It is easy to get self-absorbed here. A kind of real-life version of "Snow Falling on Cedars". I step over sea weed, crab shells, and a big dead flat fish. There are a lot of Blue Herons around, but I'm not successful at getting any pictures with my BlackBerry. Ironic, since blowing them out of the sky as a kid was so easy. They must have gotten smarter. Twenty minutes along the beach brings me to the "1000 steps" that lead up to Safeway. Mmmmmmm... Safeway.
